How will Gael Monfils fare in the Atlanta hard court tournament?

The years go by, you don’t get any younger. Gael Monfils must also have this realization in his stomach. The showman from Paris has only appeared sporadically in the last two seasons, due to multiple injuries the 36-year-old has had to take a break from time to time. Most recently, the ex-world number six appeared at the French Open, where after winning a five-set battle against Argentinian Sebastian Baez, he was unable to compete against Holger Rune in the second round. This time the wrist pinched.

Kei Nishikori also uses Atlanta for an ATP tour comeback

So now the next attempt by Elina Svitolina’s husband to get back on track on the ATP tour. Not a sure-fire success, as can be seen in the difficult comeback attempts by Dominic Thiem or Alexander Zverev. Monfils opens (wildcarded) against Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis. Should the French succeed, a duel with Alex de Minaur (also Australia), who was second seeded in the US state of Georgia, would be on the program in the round of 16.

Kei Nishikori has also been trying to get back on the big men’s tour in recent weeks after his protracted back problems and a few delicate attempts at walking at ATP Challenger tournaments. The Japanese superstar, in the main draw thanks to protected ranking, tries his luck against Jordan Thompson (and Australia again). Next stop would be the young American Ben Shelton in case of a win. Incidentally, the top seed in Atlanta is the American Taylor Fritz, who, like de Minaur, has a bye available in round one.
