GAC Unveils Aion UT: $A21,400 Electric Hatchback with 600 km Range for Australia

GAC Unveils Aion UT: $A21,400 Electric Hatchback with 600 km Range for Australia

GAC, a major automotive player poised to make waves in Australia, has officially launched an electric hatchback priced at $A21,400, boasting an impressive 600 km driving range and targeting international markets.

The highly anticipated hatchback, designed to take on the market-leading MG4, was showcased during the grand unveiling at the Guangzhou Auto Show and will be known as the Aion UT.

This latest edition in the Aion lineup incorporates a powerful 100 kW electric motor, enabling the vehicle to accelerate to speeds reaching up to 150 km/h, making it a sporty contender in its segment.

This performance will be supported by a state-of-the-art lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, providing approximately 600 km range according to the NEDC testing cycle.

Considering the more stringent WLTP testing cycle, the practical range is likely closer to 500 km, which remains competitive against many rivals within the same price bracket.

The Aion UT showcases a sleek, sloping front profile complemented by a stylish curved rear hatch, measuring an overall length of 4,270 mm.

That measurement positions it comparably with other hatchbacks in its category, setting the stage for competition against the likes of the MG4, GWM Ora, and the BYD Dolphin.

The interior of the UT incorporates a modern and minimalist aesthetic, equipped with two prominent screens for enhanced user experience.

The striking interior is defined by a large 14.6-inch touch infotainment display, paired with an additional 8.8-inch screen conveniently positioned behind the steering wheel.

The launch of this model has been met with enthusiasm, particularly among local EV enthusiasts eager to see a greater selection of compact electric vehicles on Australian roads.

Sydney EV, a local admirer of electric vehicles and a reader of The Driven, took to X to express excitement: “GAC Aion #EV expected to come to #Australia! Not a bad looking car! Small hatch class, so going after the BYD Dolphin market. No real range details, but claims of up to 800KM!! If so, that would be amazing! Even if it managed 60% of that! Will be epic range.”

In a surprising move, GAC made an appearance at a significant Mobility industry event in Melbourne last month, underlining its commitment to enter the Australian market.

Initially, GAC aims to introduce the Aion V electric SUV to Australia, followed closely by a range of other models, with the UT hatchback potentially serving as the second vehicle to reach Australian shores.

The Aion UT is scheduled for delivery within China by the first quarter of 2025, with international markets set to follow shortly thereafter.

Given the recent strong demand for models like the MG4, if the Aion UT is priced competitively, it has great potential to become a popular choice in Australia, particularly for those not exclusively seeking SUVs.
