Sources have revealed that rising Formula 2 star Gabriel Bortoleto is on the verge of finalizing a deal with the Sauber F1 team, which is currently transitioning under the auspices of Audi as the automotive giant accelerates its ambitious plans to fully acquire the team by 2026. This coveted last available seat in Formula 1 has become increasingly desirable, reflecting its significance in the elite racing series.
Currently leading the Formula 2 championship, Bortoleto has been affiliated with McLaren’s driver development program since the end of 2023 and is fresh off securing the Formula 3 championship title last season. It appears that McLaren will facilitate his transition to Sauber, having clarified that they would permit him to exit his contract if he successfully negotiates a position with the Swiss team.

The competition for the coveted seat at Sauber was fierce, especially following the confirmation that current Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg will remain with the team for the following year. Among those vying for the position, present Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas was a strong contender. However, Bottas’s insistence on a multi-year contract might have influenced Mattia Binotto, CEO and CTO of Sauber, to ultimately favor Bortoleto over the experienced Mercedes driver.
For Bottas, Sauber represents the sole full-time seat opportunity available, and should this chance materialize falter, he may have to explore alternative avenues. An intriguing possibility for the Finnish driver could be a return to Mercedes in a reserve role, a scenario he did not dismiss during a recent interview. He candidly stated:
“Firstly, the priority is to stay as a race driver, that’s what I want, and that’s what I’m pushing for with Mattia [Binotto].
“But, of course, as I don’t have anything signed. I’ve got to look at all the alternatives including going back to the Mercedes family. That’s for sure one option and I would consider it.”
Bortoleto’s anticipated agreement with Sauber could potentially hinder interim Williams driver Franco Colapinto’s aspirations for a full-time seat in F1 for the 2025 season.
