The guide with lots of tips is now available for download, and from April 19 it will be available as a book in GB* restaurants. In addition to inspiring stories regarding innovative projects and district initiatives, the handbook contains numerous practical instructions and tips for residents who want to become active themselves.

“In Vienna we encourage residents to get involved in their neighborhood and to get involved in ‘their district’. With success – more and more people are taking responsibility and helping to shape their living environment together with others. In this way, each and every individual can contribute to a successful coexistence – and to making their own neighborhood even more livable and lovable. I cordially invite everyone to get interesting suggestions and ideas free of charge from the urban renewal area management,” said Kathrin Gaál, Deputy Mayor and City Councilor for Women and Housing.

“Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus has developed tremendously in recent years. This is mainly thanks to all those people who are actively involved and implement their own ideas for a colorful and lively neighborhood. Together with the experts from the Urban Renewal Department, we support this commitment on the part of the people in the district. Because together we can achieve a lot!” adds district manager Dietmar Baurecht.

The area support for urban renewal (GB*) has been working for almost 50 years to ensure that people in their neighborhood feel comfortable and have opportunities to get involved and help shape their living environment. The GB* district experts provide support with advice, action and a neighborhood network when it comes to making ideas concrete and realizing them.

Residents who cook together in the neighborhood garden, artists who design fire walls, business people who organize a festival for the neighborhood – thanks to numerous committed people, Vienna’s Grätzl are colourful, diverse and lively. The districts of Reindorf and Sechshaus in the 15th district show particularly impressively how positive neighborhoods can develop when the residents stand up for their surroundings.

Committed residents and business people have been helping the Grätzl to thrive and develop for years. They have their say in the “Do It Together City” handbook. People who set impulses together, became active and implemented neighborly ideas. The “Stadtmacher*innen” talk regarding their motivation to help shape the city, share their own experiences and knowledge and have practical tips for everyone who wants to do the same.

The thematic spectrum ranges from the desire for more trees in the Grätzl to the sharing of rooms and other resources to the redesign of an entire street. The people presented in the book and their stories show what is possible and what it takes to become active yourself and, for example, to start a neighborhood initiative.
