The heads of state and government of the G7 approved new sanctions once morest Russia on Friday because of the war it is waging once morest Ukraine.
This is what emerges from a press release made public on the site of the White House, at the end of a meeting of the leaders of the group around Ukraine today, in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
The Heads of State and Government of the G7, – an informal grouping of seven advanced economies of the world which also includes the European Union (The EU is associated with the work of the group, and is represented by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission, editor’s note)-, reaffirmed their commitment to form a common front once morest the “illegal and unjustified Russian war once morest Ukraine”.
“We have adopted sanctions, import bans among other measures, with the aim of reducing our dependence on Russian energy sources,” the statement said.
In the same context, the G7 considered in its press release that Russia’s declaration of its intention to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus “is dangerous and unacceptable”.
The G7 leaders urged Russia to “cease its aggression and withdraw immediately, completely and unconditionally from all internationally recognized territory of Ukraine”.
This decision follows the imposition of sanctions by the United Kingdom penalizing Russian exports, according to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
“Russia must pay the price for illegal war,” Sunak said in an exclusive interview with Britain’s BBC channel on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
The G7 brings together Italy, Germany, the United States, France, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom. These countries alone account for nearly 38% of global GDP.
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched what it calls a special military operation in Ukraine, which sparked international anger and economic sanctions once morest Moscow. To end the conflict, Moscow demands that kyiv abandon its plan to join military alliances, which Ukraine considers an interference in its sovereignty.
