G20 Health | Adoption of two joint declarations at the ministerial meeting

This Wednesday October 30 and Thursday October 31, 2024, the G20 ministers in charge of Health met in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) for the health ministerial meeting. The opportunity to discuss several major issues for global health such as strengthening prevention, preparation and the international response to pandemics, health equity, digital health as well as the links between climate change and health. Antoine Saint-Denis, delegate for European and international affairs of social ministries, represented France at this ministerial meeting.

“Building a fairer world and a sustainable planet”. The general theme of the Brazilian presidency illustrates the challenges of today’s world, to which all countries must respond. For this year, the Brazilian presidency had identified four priorities for the health sector:

1. Prevention, preparation and response to health crises 2. Digital health 3. Health equity 4. Climate change and health

Several other meetings also took place on this occasion: a joint meeting of the Ministers of Finance and Health, two high-level events on the One Health approach and the links between climate change and population health as well as fundraising for the Pandemic Fund and an information meeting on the WHO investment cycle of which France is co-champion.

France’s action under Brazilian presidency of the G20 health

France supported, during the discussions, Brazilian priorities, in particular: the creation of a Coalition to develop vaccines, treatments and diagnostics for neglected diseases and digital health as a powerful lever in the face of major system challenges. health

This ministerial meeting made it possible to converge the positions of the G20 members on several crucial issues for health. In particular, they expressed their desire to:

Prevent, prepare for, and respond to pandemics, with a focus on local and regional production of medicines, vaccines, and strategic health supplies for neglected diseases and populations. To work in favor of digital health, by developing telehealth, integrating and analyzing data from national health systems.
