G. Nausėda: I see book burning as a show, the ruling party must look for answers in the coalition

A member of the Freedom Party burned three books describing homosexual relationships outside the Seimas on Tuesday, protesting the parliament’s decision to reject the Government’s proposal to waive the ban on promoting the concept of the LGBTIQ family.

“I consider it as probably what Mr. Raskevičius wanted to do – a show,” the president told reporters in Panevėžys on Wednesday. – However, if Mr. Raskevičius or the Freedom Party do not like the decisions made by the Seimas, they should first look for answers in the governing coalition, of which they are still members.

TVRaskevičius stated on Tuesday that the Government no longer has the support of the ruling majority on value issues.

The leader of the Freedom Party, Aušrinė Armonaitė, for her part, said on Wednesday that this is his personal opinion.

In the amendments rejected by the Seimas, it was proposed to abandon the provision now included in the law, that information that has a negative impact on minors is such “which despises family values, promotes a different concept of marriage and family formation than that established in the Constitution and the Civil Code”.

The amendments were made after Lithuania’s lost litigation at the European Court of Human Rights regarding the suspension of the publication of the book “Heart of Amber”. It describes same-sex relationships, publications.
