G. Landsbergis: The Duma’s accusations of discrimination against Russians in the Baltic countries do not correspond to reality

The statement of the Russian parliament states that the Baltic countries seek to exclude the Russian language from all social spheres, the media and the education system, and their authorities “do not hide neo-fascist connections”.

“Nothing new, nothing new, frankly, we don’t see. It seems to me that it is very difficult to look at such information objectively, considering what Russia itself is doing to its own people”, G. Landsbergis said while commenting on the statement on Wednesday.

“Due to the fact that this is a state that has removed itself from any Western world, civilized publicly accepted norms, placed itself in another age, another system of rules, therefore all the advice, all the assessments that come out of it – they do not correspond to reality at all” , he noted.

The document adopted by Russian parliamentarians states that its members “condemn the repressive policies of the governments of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia once morest the Russian-speaking population”.

The three countries are also accused of long-term promotion of nationalism and intolerance towards Russians, Russophobia, bullying in schools and kindergartens, and denigration of cultural heritage and memory.

“There is probably no larger state that represses its population more, sending them like cannon fodder to the front. If we talk regarding repression, the opposition, which has chosen Lithuania as its shelter – isn’t this repression, if it is the only way for them to escape?” said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy.

“Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is imprisoned for 25 years, is this not repression?” To be honest, such questions cannot be answered objectively,” he said.

On Monday, a Moscow court sentenced Kremlin critic V. Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison, the minister has called for sanctions to be imposed on those who contributed to his imprisonment.

V. Kara-Murza is one of the most famous Russian opposition politicians, a human rights activist, a close associate of Boris Nemtsov, an opposition figure who was killed in 2015, and a long-time critic of the Russian ruling regime.
