G. Landsbergis says he hears “various considerations” from EU members regarding Kyiv’s membership negotiations

He spoke this way after the European Commission submitted a recommendation to the member states to start official negotiations on the membership of Ukraine and Moldova in the bloc, and to grant Sakartveli the status of a candidate. However, the final and unanimous decision on this will still have to be made by the leaders of the countries.

“I cannot say whether the heads of state of the EU are ready to vote unanimously, because this is a matter of a unanimous vote,” the head of diplomacy told reporters in the Seimas on Thursday. – We hear various considerations, Hungary, an opponent of the EU’s geopolitical direction, has immediately said that it does not support such a decision, has made comments about Ukraine’s democracy, I always invite you to look in the mirror.”

However, he emphasized that the European institutions have leverage and opportunities to negotiate in order to find that solution.

“I want to believe that he will be found,” said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy.

He also pointed out that the Commission also expressed certain conditions.

The EC praised Ukraine, which was invaded by Russian troops last year, saying the government had “demonstrated extraordinary institutional strength, determination and capacity to act”, but said talks should only begin after corruption, lobbying and a law on national minorities are resolved .

“This must be taken seriously,” said G. Landsbergis.

However, he said that “Lithuania is ready to be with Ukraine and on the path of reforms”.

“We will help at every step, we will gather coalitions so that there is more help,” said the minister.

Community leaders should decide whether to accept the EC’s recommendations at the December 14-15 summit in Brussels.
