G. Landsbergis: renewal of military relations between the USA and China is a means of reducing tension

“I assess positively. This is a measure to reduce tension,” the minister told reporters in the Seimas on Thursday.

“I was just on a trip in Asia, and this particular trip was around the South China Sea, and that tension, even potential conflict, is very much felt, far more than we appreciate it here,” he added.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed to restore military ties that China severed after then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last year when they met in San Francisco on Wednesday.

G. Landsbergis called the restoration of military ties between these states a signal to China’s neighbors that there are ways to reduce tensions.

According to the minister, this decision also shows that “the military threat is not the inevitable thing that everyone is so afraid of.”

After the meeting, the parties agreed that China will take stricter measures to limit the production of fentanyl ingredients. Addiction to this drug has created a crisis in various American cities.

The two countries also agreed to hold talks on artificial intelligence and closer cooperation on climate change ahead of next month’s COP28 United Nations climate change conference in Dubai.

However, the presidents differed on the issue of Taiwan: China’s president told his US counterpart to stop arming the island and said reunification was impossible to stop.

Beijing regards this self-governing and democratic island as its territory, which it must one day reclaim, if necessary, by force. Mr. Biden, in turn, called on China to respect the upcoming election process in Taiwan.
