At the conference, G. Landsbergis discussed EU development issues together with Sakartvel President Salome Zourabichvili, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and French President’s Chancellery’s diplomatic advisor Emmanuel Bonne.
The minister noted the exceptional importance of EU expansion for Europe’s security, stability and well-being.
“We understand Sakartvel and Ukraine very well. I remember the phrase we used to repeat: Lithuania is not joining the European family, but returning. It was an inseparable understanding that we needed to return. That is why we now have such a strong understanding of countries that also seek to return to their cultural community, to which they truly belong,” said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy.
According to G. Landsbergis, the EU expansion process must be based on a strong commitment to European values, therefore, not only the geopolitical choices of the candidates are important for its success, but also progress in strengthening democracy.
“We can and should expand. It is possible to take those steps, overcome the tedious processes. It is not related to administrative processes. It has to do with the political process. If we allow ourselves to be overly burdened by the processes from Brussels, it would be a big geopolitical mistake,” the minister said at the conference.
The Munich Security Conference is the largest security conference, and this year it is being held for the 60th anniversary. The annual event brings together political leaders, academics and business representatives to discuss global security challenges and ways to overcome them.
