Following the launch of Pyongyang’s most powerful ballistic missile, G7 foreign ministers issued a joint statement saying “North Korea’s repeated reckless actions must be responded to swiftly, unitedly and decisively at the international level, in particular at the United Nations Security Council.”
North Korea on Monday tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile, potentially capable of reaching the United States.
North Korea said its leader Kim Jong Un had directed the launch and warned Washington, which has strengthened ties with South Korea, not to make any wrong decision.
Since North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006, the United Nations Security Council has passed a series of resolutions urging Pyongyang to end its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
But China, a close ally of North Korea, and Russia, both of which have veto power in the Security Council, have opposed further tightening of sanctions.
The United States, South Korea and Japan on Tuesday activated a system to share real-time data on North Korea’s missile launches, which was agreed at the trilateral summit in August.
The United States also said one of its envoys to North Korea spoke by phone with his counterparts from Japan and South Korea on Tuesday and agreed that the launch “undermined peace and stability in the region and the world.”
The US State Department said in a statement that the allies seek to fully implement Security Council resolutions, and also called on North Korea, which has shown little interest in negotiations with US President Joe Biden’s administration, to return to diplomatic cooperation.
