The foreign ministers of the G-7 countries have strongly condemned the recent executions by the military junta in Myanmar. “The executions – the first in Myanmar in more than thirty years – and the failure to carry out fair trials demonstrate the junta’s disregard for the steadfast aspirations of the Myanmar people for democracy,” said a joint statement by G -7 chief diplomats released today.
The ministers once more condemned the military coup in the Southeast Asian country and expressed concern regarding the political, economic, social, humanitarian and human rights situation in the crisis-ridden state.
First executions carried out since 1990
“We call on the military regime to immediately end the use of force, cease further arbitrary executions, release all political prisoners and those arbitrarily detained, and return the country to a democratic path,” the statement said. The G-7 countries include Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, the USA, Canada and Japan.
It was announced on Monday that the junta in Myanmar had carried out death sentences for the first time in decades, despite international protests: Four dissidents convicted in January were executed. These are the first death sentences to be carried out in the Southeast Asian crisis country since 1990.
The military in Myanmar staged a coup in February 2021 and ousted de facto Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, Myanmar has descended into chaos and violence.
