G-20 States Making Progress in Drafting Joint Final Declaration: Updates from Indian Presidency

According to the incumbent Indian presidency, the G-20 states are making progress in the struggle for a joint final declaration of the summit this weekend. The text is “almost ready” and will express a “voice” of the Global South and emerging countries, said Indian Sherpa Amitabh Kant, who is leading the negotiations for the presidency, in New Delhi today.

EU Council President Charles Michel had previously feared that this year’s summit of the leading industrialized and emerging countries might, according to the EU’s assessment, end without a joint final declaration. India is primarily trying to include the G-20 states Russia and China in the final declaration.

This is particularly sensitive in view of the fact that the Western states are calling for a condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression once morest Ukraine in the G-20 declaration, as Indian government members made clear this week. The heads of state and government of the 20 leading industrial associations in emerging countries will meet on Saturday and Sunday.

Putin and Xi canceled their participation

The presidents of Russia and China, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, have canceled their participation in the meeting. Putin will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Xi will be represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang.
