Future Role of CFF in Public Transport: Discussion Demanded by General Director Vincent Ducrot

CFF general director Vincent Ducrot demands a discussion on the future role of the CFF in public transport in Switzerland. He questions in particular the need for former federal trains to stop in the future at smaller stations.

The CFF is strong in medium to long journeys, underlines the Fribourgeois in an interview with Sonntagsblick. On the other hand, the fine distribution of passengers in the last quarter of an hour of travel is a matter for local public transport, according to him.

“We must (…) have the courage to also think regarding taboos, such as the nodal principle or the policy of stops,” he says. “We should serve centers more flexibly and break free from the rigid structure. For smaller stations, we need to think regarding where it makes sense for a train to stop.”

Quarter hour cadence

The issue was already raised last Monday during the SBB annual conference. The company’s managers had stated that they wanted the rate to increase to reach a quarter of an hour between the most important railway nodes from 2035.

A train running every 15 minutes will allow us to “take some liberties” with this structure considered rigid and to ensure a more flexible service. The nodes will be less important and the SBB will no longer have to maintain expensive infrastructure to save “a few seconds” on travel time, explained the president of the board of directors Monika Ribar at the time.

Vincent Ducrot, for his part, affirmed that the quarter-hour rate would make it possible to resolve the connection problems without the trains having to run faster.
