Region Innsbruck (OTS) – Innsbruck Information and Reservation GmbH (IIR), the subsidiary of Innsbruck Tourismus, recently received the Austrian Ecolabel as the official licensee for Green Meetings and Green Events. This means that the IIR will be able to mark events with this eco-label in the future. This award underscores the commitment of the tourism organization to the sustainable development of the industry. As a pioneering project, the Judges’ Week was certified as a Green Event at the beginning of May.

Those responsible at Innsbruck Tourismus and the 100% subsidiary Innsbruck Information und Reservation GmbH (IIR) are determined to bring regarding positive change together with partners and organizers and to promote the implementation of conferences and congresses as green events. The awarding of the Austrian eco-label as an independent seal of approval for the environment and quality represents a significant step in this direction. In future, the IIR will be able to officially label events that meet the guidelines for green events with this eco-label as a green meeting or green event. “The congress and event industry is an essential branch of the economy and tourism for our region. Being awarded the Austrian Ecolabel is a huge opportunity for us to ensure a sustainable circular economy in our beautiful living space and to offer our customers even more environmentally conscious event planning,” emphasizes Peter Paul Mölk, Chairman of Innsbruck Tourism. “In addition to the social responsibility that we as a tourism organization bear towards guests, locals and the environment, it is also our duty to keep our region competitive. Large companies will and must hold sustainable events in the future and work with certified service providers. With this award, we are setting an example and would like to take the companies in our region with us on the way to a more sustainable, competitive future,” adds Barbara Plattner, Managing Director of Innsbruck Tourism. The authorization to act as a licensee and to mark events as Green Meetings or Green Events is valid for a period of four years and is therefore valid until 2027. The IIR was tested by the Association for Consumer Information, and the IIR was presented with the Austrian Ecolabel by the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.

Judges’ week as a pioneering project

In order to receive the Austrian Ecolabel as an official licensee for Green Meetings and Green Events, the IIR had to pass an extensive test with strict requirements. This included compliance with certain criteria, such as the implementation of effective mobility management, environmentally friendly waste management and other sustainable measures in operational processes. The IIR also had to supervise an event as a green event as part of the examination. The Judges’ Week at the beginning of May was implemented as a green event as a pioneering project with the support of the IIR and the in-house Convention Bureau. “It is a pleasure for us to accompany our customers in the implementation of a green event. The Innsbruck Convention Bureau can draw on extensive specialist knowledge. With the free advice, we want to show that it is not only feasible, but also worthwhile to make a contribution to sustainability.” Christine Keith, Management IIR & Convention Bureau. A prerequisite for meeting the guidelines for Green Events is compliance with certain requirements in nine different blocks of criteria. This includes, for example, offers for environmentally friendly mobility and CO2 reduction, environmentally friendly accommodation, sustainable catering with a focus on regional products, effective waste management and social aspects. The IIR with the Innsbruck Convention Bureau supports organizers in planning and implementation so that they meet the necessary criteria.
