“Twenty years following their initial circulation, it is time to review the appearance of our banknotes, so that they are more evocative for Europeans of all ages and from all backgrounds”, launched at the end of 2021, Christine Lagarde , President of the European Central Bank (ECB).
An extensive consultation was organized among citizens: this summer, some 23,000 inhabitants of the euro zone were asked regarding their preferences. The results were presented this week. Of the seven themes proposed, three stand out both at the level of the euro zone and among the Luxembourg residents interviewed. Theme no. 1 is “European culture” (favored by 21% of inhabitants of the euro zone and 20% of residents), a subject which brought everyone in agreement since it was favorite, whatever gender and all age groups, indicates Kantar Public, the independent research firm mandated by the ECB to carry out this survey.
Monuments
In 2nd position, we find “Rivers: the rivers of life in Europe” (18% and 19%) and in 3rd, “Birds: free, resilient and inspiring” (17% and 16%).
Concretely, the ECB indicates that on the new euro banknotes, we might therefore see monuments, works of art, scientific discoveries specific to Europe, or even species of European wild birds and emblematic rivers. So why not Moselle, at the crossroads of three founding countries of the EU?
Sizes and colors unchanged
However, we will have to wait to get the answer: the Governing Council of the ECB is not expected to decide before 2026. Note that it is planned to keep the amount of the denominations in its current form (5 euros, 10 euros, 20 euros, 50 euros, 100 euros and 200 euros). Sizes and colors will most likely remain the same, in order to facilitate the transition and limit the costs of adapting processing machines, says the ECB.
On the material side, she emphasizes that she is “relentlessly” studying ways to improve the lifespan of euro banknotes and reduce their environmental footprint. They are currently printed on paper made from cotton fibers, which gives them “that particular crisp sound and better resistance to wear”.
