Future circular economy: Textile circularity rethought

As a partner in a forward-looking recycling project, the SALESIANER Group supports research and development for the production of textile fibers from used textiles.

Vienna (OTS) Sustainability and the circular economy are key issues today. Especially in the textile industry, where a significant part of the textiles is discarded year following year. And it is precisely in this context that the SALESIANER Group, together with the Austrian companies Lenzing AG, ARA, Caritas and the pulp producer Södra from Sweden, is committed to strengthening circularity within the textile industry and developing innovative solutions for the recycling of textiles.

The SALESIANER Group, Austria’s leading company for rental textiles, has many years of experience in the field of textile services. As an active project partner, you are responsible for the collection and provision of textiles that are no longer suitable for further use. SALESIANER thus assumes the role of the sustainable supply of discarded used textiles, which would otherwise no longer flow into the recycling process and would therefore end up as textile waste.

“At SALESIANER, it is particularly important to us to promote the textile circular economy and thus make a clear statement for a sustainable future. If you consider that millions of tons of textile waste are disposed of in European residual waste every year, you have to be aware of your social responsibility and work resolutely to improve the situation. Therefore, we want to counteract this waste and invest in sustainable projects and scientific work. In the long term, this should save important resources, but also establish a medium to long-term rethink within the textile industry. Of course, this works better with strong partners at our side, so I am personally pleased that this project is gaining momentum and that we can achieve initial successes,” explains Dr. Mathias Nell, MBA, Sustainability Manager SALESIANER Group.

The interaction of the project partners leads to positive results and raises the topic of circular economy within the textile industry to a new level. Caritas takes over the manual sorting of discarded textiles from SALESIANER. In doing so, she sets an example of inclusion, since this work is also carried out by people with disabilities. The sorted textiles are then recycled by Södra into high-quality pulp. Lenzing, in turn, uses state-of-the-art technologies to produce new lyocell and viscose fibers from this pulp. These fibers can then be used by textile companies to create sustainable and eco-friendly products.

The joint efforts of these project partners are helping to strengthen the idea of circularity within the textile sector and significantly reduce the ecological footprint of this industry. At the same time, social aspects are taken into account by involving people with disabilities in the recycling process and giving them meaningful work. At a time when environmental protection and social responsibility are becoming increasingly important, this project sets an impressive example of how companies can jointly develop innovative solutions to promote the circular economy while creating social benefits. The cooperation between SALESIANER, Lenzing, Södra, Caritas and ARA is a groundbreaking example for other industries and companies that also want to make a positive contribution to sustainability.
