Apple Rumored to Abandon Intel Modems for 5G Connectivity in Future Apple Watch Models
Current-generation Apple Watch models stand out in the landscape of wearables as virtually the only devices using Intel modems. This might soon change, as Apple reportedly plans to drop Intel in favor of a partnership with Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek. The move would signify a major shift for Apple’s smartwatch lineup, bringing significantly enhanced wireless connectivity through MediaTek’s 5G modems.
A New Era of Connectivity for Apple Watch: Embracing Future-Proof Technology
Currently, all Apple Watch models, including the premium Apple Watch Ultra, rely on Intel 4G modems. This is somewhat surprising given that iPhones and iPads have long adopted 5G baseband chips. However, a switch to 5G opens up exciting possibilities for Apple Watches, not only in terms of speeds but also in potential battery life improvements due to MediaTek’s advanced manufacturing processes.
“It’s possible that ditching Intel could become a necessity,” reports DeMa.
In traditional 5G networks require the considerable bandwidth of more robust signal towers that don’t make sense in wearable devices. However, MediaTek’s 5G modems leverage 5G Recap, a service specifically designed for connected devices and wearables that don’t necessitate the full speeds of standard 5G. This approach further ensures that future Apple Watches retain power efficiency.
MediaTek is known for its aggressive utilization of the latest, most efficient manufacturing processes, which is expected to have a positive impact on the battery life of future Apple Watch models. Given that battery life has been a recurring concern for smartwatch users, this could be a game-changer for Apple.
Could MediaTek Also Power Future iPhones?
Although MediaTek’s potential within future Apple Watches is evident, the burning question remains: will they energize Apple’s iPhones as well? While the company’s own in-house built 5G modem is expected to debut in the iPhone SE 4. Apple is inherently cautious, often preferring control over all aspects of its product ecosystem.
However, MediaTek has made impressive strides in its partnerships, leveraging TSMC’s advanced lithography for its Dimensity 9400 chipset to compete with Qualcomm and even Apple itself. If MediaTek continues on this trajectory, the prospect of them contributing to iPhone components in the future cannot be completely ruled out.
