Water: beware of pollution by medicines

Too many substances end up in water and risk harming health. This is particularly the case for drugs and their metabolites, which can have different effects on our body. Particular attention must be paid to antibiotics and therefore to the risk of antibiotic resistance. More and more research is being carried out to study all the substances to which humans and animals are exposed (specialists speak of an exposome). Including during the reuse – for professional use – of treated wastewater.

Cancer: ever more precise and effective weapons

Malignant tumors are attacked on all possible fronts, with indisputable results. Surgery is becoming more and more precise, radiotherapy is perfectly focused and chemotherapy – and therefore drug treatments – is constantly progressing. In addition to immunotherapy, which has now largely proven its effectiveness, new treatments – sometimes extremely personalized – regularly enrich the therapeutic arsenal.

Longevity: the latest discoveries of famous researcher Miroslav Radman

The work of this Franco-Croatian biologist, creator and director of MedILS (Mediterranean Institute of Life Sciences in Split), is the source of immense hope in the fight once morest the harmful effects of advancing age. Throughout his life, he studied DNA repair mechanisms and the aging process. He attributes the latter to the oxidation of proteins which causes irreversible damage such as the change of their conformation and their aggregation, mutations in the DNA and finally cell death. His discoveries are already having practical repercussions in the field of cosmetology.

Behind the scenes of repairing top athletes

EuroMov is a center for research, innovation and technological development in the sciences of life, health, movement, information and cognition. We study sensorimotor markers – physiological, cognitive, neuromuscular, cerebral, etc. – health, which can enable the early detection of risky behaviors and the prediction of perceptual-motor deficits/gains (talents, expertise, learning, skill). They help to improve the movement and accelerate the rehabilitation of athletes.

Stéphane Perrey, university professor in neurophysiology, director of the European Center for Research on Human Movement (EuroMov) Eva Serrano, expert advisor on high performance at the National Sports Agency, world and European medalist in rhythmic gymnastics

Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia: in pursuit of blood biomarkers

Analyzing blood content to try to understand what is happening in the brain is what the search for multiple biomarkers allows. In psychiatry, their study is intended to dismember diseases (identify their different forms), predict the response to treatments and lead to precision medicine. In neurology, blood biomarkers will make the diagnosis and early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases more reliable and efficient. The consequences of head trauma will also be better evaluated.

Marion Leboyer, head of the psychiatry and addictology center at the Henri Mondor University Hospitals, director of the genetic psychiatry laboratory at the Mondor Institute of Biomedical Research (Inserm / University of Paris Est Créteil) and of the FondaMental Foundation, Inserm Grand Prix 2021 Sylvain Lehmann, head of the biochemistry and clinical proteomics laboratory at Montpellier University Hospital and director of the Montpellier Neuroscience Institute (Inserm / University of Montpellier).

Autoimmune diseases: when the body attacks itself

While it is intended to protect us once morest viruses, bacteria and other microbes, our immune system can become dysregulated, run amok and attack our own organs. There are at least 80 so-called autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease. Researchers are developing new therapeutic strategies once morest these complex pathologies, to control the immune system without risking it letting down its guard once morest infectious agents. Meeting with specialists from the new university hospital institute in Montpellier, Immun4Cure.
