The long-awaited superlative world title fight in heavyweight boxing between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will take place on February 17th in Saudi Arabia. This was announced on Thursday at a press conference in London in the presence of the two superstars. The unification fight for the world championship belts will take place in Riyadh. The Briton Fury is WBC world champion, the Ukrainian Usyk holds the belts of the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO associations.
Both are undefeated, the 35-year-old Fury has 34 wins and one draw, while his opponent, who is a year older, has won all of his 21 fights. “The whole boxing world has been waiting for this fight for so many years,” said promoter Frank Warren in the British capital. The winner will be the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999/2000.
The two boxing professionals offered a little foretaste of next year’s show in London. “You are welcome to step into the ring with the future undisputed heavyweight champion – that is, with me,” Fury said. “You know what’s coming, you’re going to be blown to pieces. You’re fighting the best British heavyweight there has ever been.” He is determined to “cement my legacy as the number one fighter of this era.”
Usyk countered that he wasn’t listening to what Fury was saying. “I will let actions speak for themselves in the ring. If the Lord puts Tyson in my hands, I will do my job,” said the Ukrainian. He later explained that he saw the fight as an opportunity to give back to everyone who supported him. “It’s a great opportunity for my family, my country and the people who are now defending my country,” Usyk said.
Contracts for the megafight were signed back in September for a Dec. 23 bout, which was never confirmed and came following Fury’s near-defeat to former UFC champion Francis Ngannou in a non-title bout in Saudi Arabia on Oct. 28 was postponed.
