The Bienal Foundation announced, this Wednesday (13), the new president of the Foundation, Andrea Pinheiro, who succeeds José Olympio Pereira in the position. The banker and executive will take charge of the institution with the aim of expanding its educational program and selecting the curator for the next edition. The inauguration is scheduled for January 2, 2024.

Pinheiro was elected by the Foundation’s Board of Directors last Tuesday (12), with a two-year term, with the possibility of re-election. Along with it, some names were also nominated to partially renew the Biennale’s board of directors. Starting next year, Maguy Etlin, who was already a member of the Board, will become the Foundation’s first vice-president; Roberto Otero and Solange Sobral join the board; and Ana Paula Martinez, Francisco Pinheiro Guimarães, Luiz Lara and Rita Drummond remain at the institution.

Before being appointed to the presidency, Andrea Pinheiro served as second vice-president in the last two terms of the Executive Board, from 2019 to 2023. In this position, her main attribution was fundraising, and her commitment bore fruit: according to a statement from Biennial, from December 2018 to December 2023, the Foundation gained 25 new sponsors, in addition to 13 international supporters and 16 partners.

Despite frequenting museums and exhibitions, the new president claims to have a less close relationship with art than her predecessor. Unlike José Olympio, one of the country’s biggest collectors, Andrea is not an investor in works of art. With more than thirty years of experience in the financial market and senior management and team leadership positions, her work has always been more closely linked to the banking sector.

Now, as president, his main focus will be choosing who will take on the curatorship of the 36th São Paulo Biennial, which will take place in 2025. Although this is an attribution of the presidency, Pinheiro wants the selection to be made collectively, through a collegial committee, whose members have not yet been announced. Furthermore, the executive intends to increase the reach of the exhibition and make it accessible to an increasingly diverse audience. To this end, she wants to intensify the work of the exhibition’s educational sector, to ensure that the experience of visiting the Biennale is memorable and engaging for everyone.
