Function integration makes additive manufacturing interesting for machine builders

2024-01-04 23:52:00

Additive manufacturing can be an interesting production technology, especially in the production of smaller series of machines. Function integration avoids costly assembly, for which there is often a lack of manpower. One Click Metal shows at the TechniShow that additive manufacturing can be cheaper than traditional production techniques.

The German manufacturer of 3D metal printers One Click Metal, represented in the Benelux by Laagland, uses AM technology for the production of parts for its own machine, MPrint. This not only provides benefits in terms of supply chain control, but also in a financial sense. By printing a part for the cartridge that contains the metal powder, costly assembly is avoided.

Longer Z-axis increases from 144 to 255 parts per build job

Thanks to the longer Z-axis, One Click Metal can produce half as many parts per build job.

Entry-level metal printer at TechniShow

The entry-level 3D metal printer from One Click Metal will be one of the highlights at the Additive Manufacturing Theme Square in March, where exhibitors will present the AM workflow and applications. The One Click Metal metal printer is mainly intended for SME metal companies, because the entry threshold is low in terms of both ease of use and investment. Since machine builder Index Traub took over Trumpf’s former startup, the machines are built in the factory where Index Traub also builds the multi-axis CNC lathes.

Design philosophy: being able to produce efficiently

To keep investment costs low, One Click Metal’s R&D team uses the same design philosophy as the engineers who develop the CNC machines. This means developing parts and modules that you can produce as efficiently as possible and designing parts that you can reuse in the machine. After all, then you can scale up. A good example is the interface mechanism to click the powder cartridge into the machine. In addition to a valve, it contains a feather key that One Click Metal has integrated into the valve and prints as one complete module.

Lower production costs

By printing the spring, this part does not have to be purchased. Because One Click Metal needs several thousand pieces per year, the production costs alone are lower than those of a purchased part. This also includes savings on assembly costs.

Larger Z-axis, even lower cost per part

With an adjustment to the construction cylinder in the 3D metal printer, the cost advantage becomes even greater. This year introduces One Click Metal namely a machine with an extended Z axis. This means that instead of 144 interfaces in one build job, you can now print 255. This reduces the cost price per part by regarding 10 to 12 percent.

You can see the machine and the applications of One Click Metal in mid-March at Laagland on the Additive Manufacturing theme square at the Technishow. You register here for free tickets.
