The new Fujinon GF20-35mmF4 R WR is an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens and expands the possible uses of the mirrorless system cameras of the “Fujifilm GFX” series, whose large-format sensor is around 1.7 times larger than a conventional image sensor in full-frame format. (The image sensor of the GFX cameras is 43.8 mm × 32.9 mm and measures 55 mm diagonally.)
The GF20-35mmF4 R WR offers a zoom range of 20-35mm (equivalent to 16-28mm KB). The lens is therefore the ideal choice for demanding landscape and architectural photography in order to capture as much detail as possible.
The new Fujinon GF20-35mmF4 R WR – here on a GFX 100S – is a compact ultra wide-angle zoom for the medium format cameras of the GFX series from Fujifilm.
The optical construction of the GF20-35mmF4 R WR consists of 14 elements, including numerous special lenses that effectively minimize typical aberrations of short focal lengths and ensure high resolving power over the entire image area. The high-quality Nano GI coating ensures brilliant detail and color reproduction at every focal length setting. Despite the high imaging performance and the constant aperture of F4, the GF20-35mm is surprisingly light at only 725 grams for a medium-format ultra-wide-angle zoom lens.
Ultra wide angle with brilliant image quality
The lens covers the focal length range from 20mm ultra wide angle to 35mm wide angle and corresponds to a focal length of 16-28mm converted to 35mm format (KB). It thus offers the widest angle of view of all GF lenses and enables detailed shots of expansive landscapes and architecture. (Previously was the one presented in 2017 GF 23mm the strongest wide angle.)
The optical structure consists of 14 elements in ten groups. Three aspheric, one aspheric ED and three ED lenses minimize distortion and color errors (chromatic aberrations). In addition, they ensure outstanding imaging performance. All information within the wide image section is reproduced in the image with maximum sharpness and precision.
The lens surfaces are finished with the Nano GI coating developed by Fujifilm. This high-tech coating modifies the refractive index of incoming light to eliminate internal reflections and flare that cause ghosting and lens flare. The inwardly curved lens surfaces are coated in a special process that is characterized by a particularly even application and thus a high degree of effectiveness of the coating.
Compact and light
The GF20-35mmF4 R WR is built almost symmetrically. This guarantees outstanding imaging performance and at the same time a compact, lightweight construction is achieved. The short flange distance of the mirrorless camera system enables an optical system that allows a perfect balance between low weight, handy dimensions and the best possible image quality.
Despite being an ultra-wide-angle zoom, the lens weighs just 725 grams and is just 112.5mm long. The inner zoom mechanism ensures that the housing maintains its compact dimensions even when zooming. The 82 mm filter thread also contributes to easy handling: The use of filters in landscape and architectural photography is therefore extremely uncomplicated, even with ultra-wide-angle shots.
Splashproof and dustproof
The lens is ideal for use even in bad weather or in dusty environments. To protect once morest moisture and dust, the tube is weatherproof sealed at twelve points, which also guarantees its suitability for use in cold conditions down to minus 10 degrees and is made clear by the “WR” designation in the name. The front lens has a water and dirt-repellent fluorine coating that is easy to clean.
