For several months, the price of gasoline has been constantly falling. Barely ten weeks ago, prices at the pump were €1.91 per litre. It is therefore 11 cents per liter gained since the previous Easter starts! To find prices lower than those we see today, we have to go back to December 2022.
Diesel is also continuing on this path. It is down 2.8 cents compared to the previous week, at 1.67 euros per litre. An amount that remains high, compared to what it was before the war in Ukraine. At the beginning of 2021, it was 1.31 euros per liter.
OPEC wants to raise prices
The reasons for this drop? A Chinese economy which has struggled to increase its production since the Covid crisis, and the fear of an American recession. The price of a barrel of Brent lost 2.5 dollars in one week, and 12 dollars in less than three months. In an attempt to support prices, Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest producer, announced on Monday that it would extend the reduction in its production in August. It’s a million barrels less produced every day since this weekend. In April, OPEC +, the organization of petroleum exporting countries, had already announced to cut production. But this measure has so far failed to stem the fall in prices.
For vacationers, this good news adds up to another opportunity to refuel at a lower cost. Michel-Edouard Leclerc, the CEO of the retail brand, announced at the microphone of France Info last Wednesday: “We have decided that every weekend of these holidays, we will carry out operations at cost price, from Friday morning to Sunday evening.
