Fuels: lower prices at the pump on January 1

It has become a ritual, especially this year, with the war in Ukraine: at the beginning of each month, consumers carefully scrutinize price fluctuations at the pump. And four days from January 1, good news, we know that the fuel will drop. Well, especially diesel.

The decrease is especially significant for diesel, with 12.8 francs less per liter: it drops to 175.5 francs on the 1is January. On the other hand, almost no change on gasoline: barely 1 franc less, or 172.9 francs per liter of unleaded.

These reductions have nothing to do with the decisions of the government which, it will be recalled, had played this year on the taxation of petroleum products (TPP and TAPP) to limit the surge in prices. Because this deliberation, voted by the Congress, ends on January 1, 2023.

If prices fall, especially on diesel, it is under the effect of the international market. A slight lull following a year 2022 marked by high fuel inflation.

Explanations from Nicolas Favray, head of the energy regulation section at Dimenc:

In six months, diesel jumped 50% between February and August. And gasoline took almost 30%. Even if prices have fallen slightly since then, we are far from the trends of January 2022. In one year, gasoline has increased by 16 francs, and diesel 42 francs.

Diesel, which since September, is more expensive than gasoline. This will not have escaped motorists who drive on diesel.
