Prime Video has announced that it will be the platform that launches Pimpinero: Blood and Gasolinea film directed by the Colombian filmmaker Andres Baiz (Griselda, Narcos, Narcos: Mexico, Satan), which will mark the acting debut of Juaneswinner of 26 Latin Grammys and three Grammy Awards.
The pimpineros are gasoline smugglers who operate mainly on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, illegally transporting fuel from one country to another and risking their lives in the process.
The film is set in the border desert between Colombia and Venezuela, where smugglers risk their lives. When Juanthe youngest of a clan of three brothers involved in this dangerous business, is forced to work for a sinister rival, the dark side of the business is exposed with tragic consequences. Determined to uncover the horrible secrets that surround this no man’s land, DianaJuan’s girlfriend, embarks on a journey in search of the truth.
The cast is made up of Alberto Guerra (Griselda), Alejandro Speitzer (The Head of Joaquin Murrieta), Laura Osma (Goals against) and Juanes. The script is signed by Maria Camila Arias (Summer Birds) along with Baiz, who is in charge of the direction.
How it was done
“Leader deals with the geographic and physical bordersbut above all about ethical, moral and emotional boundaries,” said Andrés Baiz, director, writer and producer of the film in the statement distributed by Prime Video. “The result is an exciting film, full of beauty, truth and a lot of adrenaline. I can’t wait to share it with the public.”
In an exclusive interview with Variety, Baiz spoke about casting Juanes and filming the movie. “I wanted a cast that seemed unique, fresh and daring to me, and one day Juanes came to mind, so I got in touch with him,” the director said.I really like your stage presence.. He accepted the challenge of acting for the first time with total dedication.”

Regarding the filming, the filmmaker revealed that it took place over nine weeks in the deserts of La Guajira (Colombia), so the conditions were somewhat extreme. “These are very remote and rugged places, with a lot of dust and sun. The logistics of transporting, housing, feeding and hydrating so many people was very demanding and complex, especially in such an unpredictable region with so little infrastructure.”
When it premieres
Pimpinero: Blood and Gasoline has been officially selected to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festivalwith its world premiere scheduled for September 9.
The film is part of Centrepiece’s international programming at TIFF and will premiere on Prime Video later this year.
