Fuel: which cars can really run on frying oil?

Let’s get rid of the confusion that might be created the wording of the amendment, like the title of this article: there is no question of pouring frying oil directly into your gas tank. This must first be filtered according to precise rules, and preferably by a professional. Moreover, this will not concern “only diesel vehicles, not those that run on gasoline, that’s a certainty”explains Christine Rousselle, professor at the University of Orléans and specialist in combustion phenomena, “because of a problem related to the issue of auto-ignition and fuel viscosity”. Vegetable oil has indeed “not at all the same viscosity as diesel, and it depends a lot on temperature, which implies a strong variation between winter and summer”.

“The consequence for the user”develops the expert, “it’s that the deposit will accumulate in the combustion chamber, the pistons, or on the injectors”, even more in winter when the oil will be cold. This is why this recycled frying oil cannot be used 100%, but only mixed with diesel, and requires regular maintenance of engine parts clogged with deposits.
