Fuel prices are soaring, gas station attendants fear having to close: resigned motorists react

One word to illustrate your state of mind when refueling this morning: resignation. Diesel costs €2.28 per litre. Gasoline is close to 2 euros. Motorists fill their tank with fatality.

“It’s madness”, “It’s a disaster, I don’t even fill up. I’m at 50 euros for 21 liters”, “I suffer like everyone else”. In Gosselies (Charleroi), some of them reacted to our microphone. Splitting and limiting consumption are the only solutions.

Repeated increases or a return to normal, motorists are divided. “I usually put 100 euros, but here I only put 50 because I’m going to wait for it to decrease a little”told us a motorist.

Josiane is a pensioner and is learning to drive. For her, this is the third full of her life and already the most expensive. “It’s like that, we have nothing to say.”

CNG gas is also breaking records by being 4 times more expensive in a few months. For individuals, few tanks left full this Friday morning to limit damage.

On Thursday, a hundred pumps were closed out of the 3,000 in the country. The attendants preferred not to sell rather than selling at a loss. Today the movement is a little less followed, but the gas station attendants are faced with another problem: they have to deal with a supply problem. The demand for fuel has increased sharply in recent days due to a feeling of fear. Many Belgians fear that prices will continue to rise. So many of you fill up your car and fill jerry cans with gasoline.

Another reason linked to this supply problem: the major oil groups prefer first to supply their own network of service stations at the expense of the pumps run by small independents. However, among the 3200 stations in the country, half are managed by independents. Today, it is therefore not uncommon to see pumps closed for lack of fuel. A complicated situation to manage for many pump attendants.
