Fuel from Patras for the planes of the future – Advent’s collaboration with Airbus

Advent Technologies emerged from the research laboratories of the University of Patras in 2006, starting its successful course from the Science Park, where it still has its research laboratories today.

Almost 20 years later, the company, a spin-off of the Technology and Research Foundation and the University of Patras, is based in Boston, USA and is now a leading player in hydrogen technology on a global scaledeveloping innovations that first appeared in the research laboratories of Patras.

Most recently, Advent reached an agreement with Airbus to proceed together on the first hydrogen-fueled aircraft flight. Airbus puts up the money and Advent puts up the people, materials and third-party research centers.

Airbus aims to commercialize the first hydrogen-fueled passenger aircraft by 2035.

To achieve this, the Advent team is working to create an electric propulsion system for the aircraft, which will be powered entirely by fuel cells, explains the company’s co-founder, president and CEO Dr. Vassilis Grigoriou.
The collaboration with the French group is expected to start in January 2024, while Airbus estimates that the first test flights will take place in 2026.

The plane that Airbus aims to develop in less than ten years, through the Airbus ZEROe program, will have a range of about 1,000 nautical miles. The collaboration between the two companies, which is worth several million euros, provides for the provision of financing and know-how from Airbus. From her side Advent will provide equipment, manpower, logistics and conduct the research and development.
