The prospects for the development of fuel cells have never been so good as a result of research and development efforts, strategic choices by large industrial groups and in response to the environmental context.

The power of a battery depends on the size of the repetitive cell, the number of cells in a stack (from 1 to a few hundred) and the number of stacks used, which leads to powers of a few watts to a few dozen megawatt. Fuel cell systems are particularly relevant in the heavy mobility sector which requires high power and autonomy. This is the case for heavy land mobility (buses, trucks, trains) but also non-land mobility (ships, planes) which will be covered in this article.

Applications of fuel cells (PACs), low powers (< 100 W) which can be used in a variety of portable applications (personal microcomputers, autonomous electricity sources for camping, telecommunications, drones), and of intermediate powers (1 kW) which allow for example the powering of handling trolleys, will be the subject of the third part of this article.
