Markus Fuchs set a new Austrian record over 100 m on Thursday at the Liese Prokop Memorial in St. Pölten. The 27-year-old won at 1.2m per second tailwind in 10.08s ahead of Britain’s Elliot Jones in 10.20. On July 16, 2022, with a score of 10.15, Fuchs matched Andreas Berger’s all-time high since 1988 and now pushed it down once more by 7/100. “Now the record belongs to me alone, that’s so cool,” said Fuchs.
It is the fourth fastest time this year run by a European behind the Brits Reece Prescod (9.99) and Zharnel Hughes (10.01) and the French Mouhamadou Fall (10.06). The direct limit for the World Championships in Athletics in August in Budapest is 10.00 seconds, the top 48 are included. Fuchs has already qualified for the European Championships in Rome 2024, 10.16 are necessary for this, the qualification period began on May 27th.
“It feels sensational. This is my stadium, this is my track. The atmosphere here is fantastic. I expected everything today, but not a race like this. I can’t even classify it yet, it will definitely be another a few days,” Fuchs explained. “I can’t remember the run at all, I was just easygoing and relaxed. I’ve always talked big, but my ‘Road to 9.99’ is slowly getting closer.”
Lukas Weißhaidinger won the discus throw, the Upper Austrian reached 63.61 m in his best attempt and prevailed just ahead of Brit Nicholas Percy with 63.57. “Actually, the plan would have been to throw as consistently far as possible. The goal would have been four valid attempts,” the ÖLV record holder was self-critical. “Technically I was too flawed today. I never found the right moment to throw the ball. In the end I had to be happy to have won.” Javelin thrower Victoria Hudson, who has also already qualified for the Budapest World Championships, won with 59.81 m.
Lena Pressler also set an ÖLV record over 400 m hurdles with 56.15 seconds. In second place, Pressler was only beaten by Moroccan Noura Ennadi (55.43). “I didn’t expect the Austrian record today. As always, I ran away a bit cautiously, but unlike last week in Regensburg I put more pressure on in the second corner and was able to keep up the pace well to the finish,” said Pressler, which focuses on the U23 European Championship. “But it would be amazing if the World Cup worked out,” she said, referring to Hungary.
The 100 m went to the German Alexandra Burghardt in 11.24 seconds, fourth was Magdalena Lindner in 11.43.
