Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the scandal of the resounding bankruptcy of the crypto trading platform FTX in November 2022. Manhattan District Judge Lewis Kaplan also ordered restitution of 11.02 billions of dollars. While recognizing that it was illusory.
The culprit, aged only 32 and endowed with superior intelligence, committed criminal acts because he wanted to become “an immensely influential person politically in this country,” said Lewis Kaplan. The judge took into account the behavioral handicap linked to his autism. But he also warned of the “not negligible” risk that Sam Bankman-Fried would reoffend, since he “never had a word of remorse for having committed terrible crimes”.
