FSB investigators charged with treason a resident of the Khabarovsk Territory, Andrei Vechirko, who, according to investigators, financed the Armed Forces of Ukraine. TASS reports this.
According to the FSB, Vechirko sent transfers using cryptocurrency. TASS notes that this is the first criminal case of treason related to cryptopayments to the Ukrainian military.
Vechirko is under arrest in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center.
The arrest of a resident of the Khabarovsk Territory (his last name was not given at that time) became known in June. As then reported to the FSB, he “using cryptocurrency instruments transferred personal funds through third parties who reside in Ukraine to the account of a foreign charitable foundation.” Then, according to the FSB, this money was used to buy drones, ammunition and medical equipment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In April 2023, the State Duma toughened the punishment for treason – now this charge can result in up to life imprisonment. Previously, the maximum term was 20 years.
