He Federal Security Service (FSB, former KGB) of Russia announced this Tuesday (06.27.2023) that it closed the criminal case for armed rebellion once morest the Wagner paramilitary groupdirected by Yevgeny Prigozhinwho shook the Kremlin over the weekend with a mutiny aborted in less than 24 hours, when the mercenary troops were 200 kilometers from Moscow.
“The criminal case initiated by the armed rebellion of the Wagner Group has been archived” this Tuesday, the FSB said in a statement cited by the official TASS news agency. The note adds that “during the investigation of the criminal case on armed rebellion, it was established that on June 24 its participants ceased the actions directly aimed at committing that crime.”
The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office opened the case under Article 279 of the Russian Criminal Code on Friday night, when Prigozhin and his men announced that they had crossed the Russian border in Rostov from Ukraine and started a “march for justice” towards Moscow, following denouncing an attack by the Russian Army once morest a mercenary camp in the Russian rear.
Prepare transfer
The head of the Wagner Group, a private military company that is illegal in Russia but is supplied by the Ministry of Defense, denounced the disastrous management of the Russian military leadership, headed by the minister of that portfolio, Serguei Shoigu, and the head of state Major, Valery Gerasimov. On Saturday night Prigozhin ordered his forces to return to their camps following reaching an agreement.
This same Tuesday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that “preparations” are underway to transfer Wagner’s “heavy” military equipment to the Army. Russia takes this step following Vladimir Putin gave the mercenaries three exits last night who revolted: return home, go into exile in Belarus or sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense.
This means in practice the dismantling of Wagner as it was known since it was created in 2014 following the outbreak of the conflict in Donbas, in eastern Ukraine.
