Fifteenth Saturday following a sprint race conditioned by the pileup at the start, Fabio Quartararo struggled to capitalize on his starting position on Sunday despite a contested race, this time on a regular basis.
If he was eighth at the end of the first lap, the Yamaha rider was going to downgrade very quickly, explaining that he felt powerless in the pack. In the same group as the Ducatis ofAeneas Bastianini and Pramac Racing riders and, later, the official Aprilias and the KTM of Jack Millerhe may have fought as well as he might, he was frustrated not to have been able to show more bite in the confrontations.
For him, this race has simply highlighted the weaknesses of the Yamaha and should serve as an observation to support his own feedback with a view to the developments to be made to break the impasse.
“We clearly saw the negative points of the bike”, summarizes Fabio Quartararo. “I made a good start, except that in the first three laps they have an extra grip that we don’t have, which makes me make mistakes, lose positions, and then to overtake we are really in difficulty. . So we really saw the difference with the others.”
“The only good thing regarding the race, I would say, is that we really saw where we need to improve,” he adds. And the conclusion is clear for the pilot: it is “everywhere”.
“There are places where [on doit progresser] much more than others, but the engine is number one, acceleration [où] we lose a lot, the grip in the first laps”, he continues. “We compared a lap where I had just a little aspi in three short straights, it’s three tenths. And that’s what we miss a lot compared to the others. On this circuit, we have almost half a second on the just lap in the engine, so it’s still huge.”
Falling to 12th place just before the halfway mark, Fabio Quartararo then got rid of Johann ZarcoJack Miller and Enea Bastianini, before stealing eighth place from Aleix Espargaró in the last lap. So there was better at the end, but he can not be satisfied with it. “I gain positions but I lose a lot at the start and then I really get into the red, I use all the rubber, I have no more tyres”, he explains.
“It’s not the way I would like to ride this bike but it’s the only way I have to stay with them. When they can really keep tires on the angle and reaccelerate with the straight bike, we we have to pick up speed because we don’t have an engine. There are a lot of complications which mean that we are really in difficulty.”
Although this eighth place is his best result since the French GP, Fabio Quartararo cannot logically see any rebound in it. He nevertheless tries to put much more into perspective than he was able to do a few months ago and retains the positive.
“Honestly, it’s frustrating. It’s not the result I want, but in the end I said at the start of the weekend that I would have been happy if I had given 100% and that is what I did. So even if it’s a result that I don’t like at all, I’m leaving still happy with all the work we’ve done this weekend.”
