YEMEN’S Houthi group claimed to have attacked military targets in Jaffa, central Israel, with a new hypersonic ballistic missile on Sunday (15/9), in a show of solidarity with Gazans who are at the center of Israeli occupation.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the missile traveled 2,040 kilometers (1,200 miles) and hit its target, after Israeli air defenses failed to intercept it.

“Geographical obstacles, US-UK aggression, and espionage and interception systems will not prevent Yemen from supporting Palestine,” he added, as reported by Anadolu, Monday (16/9).

There was no immediate comment from Israel on the Houthi claims, but the Israeli air force was previously reported as saying it would investigate how the missile could have traveled that far without being intercepted.

The attack came hours after at least nine people were injured after a ballistic missile from Yemen landed near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport. Debris from the interceptor missile fell on a train station on the outskirts of Modi’in in central Israel, causing damage, according to the Haaretz daily.

Fires also broke out in an open area in Kfar Daniel in central Israel due to additional falling debris. Yemen’s Houthi group has targeted Israeli-owned, flagged, operated or bound for Israeli ports in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with missiles and drones in solidarity with Gaza, which has been under intense Israeli attack since Oct. 7.

While the United States (US) and Britain launched retaliatory airstrikes on Houthi sites in Yemen, the Houthis stated that they consider all American and British ships as military targets. (I-2)
