Fruits that may help reduce liver fat.. Learn about them

The study found that the antioxidant-rich camu camu fruit, which comes straight from the Amazon, reduces fat levels in the liver.

In the study, 30 participants took either camu camu fruit extract or a placebo at different times over a 12-week period. The participants underwent MRI scans to measure levels of fat in their livers.

The researchers observed a 7.43% decrease in liver fat in participants who took camu camu extract. The placebo group saw an 8.42% increase in liver fat.

This effect stems from the polyphenols found in camu camu and their relationship with gut microbes.

“Microbes metabolize large polyphenol molecules that cannot be absorbed by the intestine, and convert them into smaller molecules that the body can absorb to reduce liver fat,” explains André Marette, professor and researcher at the University Institute of Cardio-Pulmonary Medicine of Quebec, Laval University (IUCPQ).

The research team identified two possible mechanisms of action of the small polyphenol molecules: they can reduce the formation of fat in the liver, and stimulate the breakdown of fats through oxidation. The combination of the two mechanisms may explain the high effectiveness of the extract.

However, the team noted a wide variation in response to Camu Camu.

“We hypothesize that the initial gut microbiota influences the response to polyphenols,” explains Maret. “If we find the factors involved, we may be able to modify the gut microbiota and increase the effectiveness of the extract.”

Although camu camu is an exotic fruit, the extract is readily available in capsule form. However, Marette stresses the importance of checking the content of certain polyphenols, as not all commercial products are created equal.

The study was published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine.
