FRP will close UP to free up police resources

– Rape and violence must be prioritized. But when the police do not have the capacity to do so, the warning bells should ring for more. Then it is logical and wise to move resources, says the parliamentary representative The online newspaper.

In the interview, he advocates closing UP as a special body in the police.

– We do not believe that the tasks of UP should go away or that you should stop having checks on the roads, but that the police chief should have the freedom and authority to prioritize himself based on the crime picture, says Johnsen.

He refers, among other things, to the police in Innlandet, who are struggling with a lot to do. NRK wrote at the beginning of May that over 400 cases in the police district had until then been dismissed this year due to a lack of capacity.

The proposal from Johnsen is not new in the FRP context. Already in 2009, the then Frp leader Siv Jensen spoke up TV 2 that she would abolish UP. They were not able to implement the proposal during the years they were in government. In total, the FRP had five ministers of justice in the period 2013–2020.

The Ministry of Justice is not enthusiastic regarding Johnsen’s proposal.

– It would not be appropriate to close UP. 118 people lost their lives on Norwegian roads last year. Police checks are a very effective measure to prevent traffic-dangerous behaviour, and UP plays an important role in the police’s work with traffic safety, the ministry writes in an email to Nettavisen.
