[의정부참튼튼병원 관절외과=윤영현 원장] Shoulder pain is very common among modern people who spend a long time looking at computers, smartphones, and televisions, so it is a symptom that they pay less attention to. In most cases, they think that they will get better following a few days of rest, and then visit the hospital only following they become unbearably serious.
However, this shoulder pain can be a symptom of frozen shoulder, so it should not be neglected. Because of the name, frozen shoulder is considered a disease that only affects people following the age of 50, but in fact, frozen shoulder is increasingly occurring in younger people.
Frozen shoulder refers to adhesions and inflammation of the membrane surrounding the shoulder joint. This causes pain in the shoulder and stiffness of the joint, making it difficult to raise the arm forward and backward. It becomes difficult to use the shoulder in everyday life, such as washing the face or changing clothes.
It is called frozen shoulder because it appears around the age of 50, but the official name is adhesive capsulitis. It is also called freeze-drying because the shoulder hardens as if it were frozen. Shoulder injuries caused by excessive exercise, incorrect posture, lack of excessive exercise, and chronic diseases are cited as causes.
The reason why frozen shoulders are neglected is because over time, stiff shoulders naturally loosen and symptoms are alleviated. Therefore, it is often considered that it will heal naturally if left alone, but if not treated properly, the function of the shoulder may not be completely restored, and the range of motion of the shoulder may remain narrow.
If you find frozen shoulder in its early stages, it is possible to alleviate the symptoms with conservative treatments such as anti-inflammatory painkillers, physical therapy, exercise therapy, and injection therapy. However, if these treatments do not work, surgical treatment is necessary to remove the inflammation of the joint capsule and widen the reduced joint capsule.
In particular, it is important to treat at an early stage because the shoulder function may not fully recover, and followingeffects may remain and the pain may become severe if left unattended even if the pain appears and then subsides. For this reason, it is good to make stretching a habit and avoid excessive use of the shoulders.
