Artificial intelligence has been on everyone’s lips for over a year and is dividing people’s minds. Some find what ChatGPT and the like are doing practical, others imagine a dark future. It’s no secret that AI makes a lot of things easier, but as a musician should you hand over your creativity to a machine? Stefan Schmidt from THEY GO SINGING and HEADWATER is now starting the test with Metalverse.
The first band that came out of it is called FROSTBITE ORCKINGS and offers the world’s first AI album “The Orchis Eclipse”, which still mixes computer intelligence with the creativity of real musicians. But not only the music is said to have been created by the AI, the computer also created the artwork, concept drawings, the orcish musicians and the videos.
I haven’t been able to find out what Stefan is doing here musically or who else is involved, but the result is a decent album somewhere between symphonic power metal and death metal.
There are well-produced death reels from the brand here AMON AMARTH combined with epic-tinged power metal in the direction ORDEN OGAN including opulent choirs and keys, which is easy on the ear, but only works with growls. Despite the predominantly mid-tempo blasting, the whole thing is reasonably dynamic and varied and in “Nightfall” there are even ballad-like elements towards the end. It’s not incomprehensible that the band is going through the roof like DETHKLOK on YouTube, Spotify and the like. With all the orchestral stuff in the background and some pop rhythms, they somehow also have the charm of high-flyers like SATURDAY or POWERWOLF along with it.
And so the first AI project is very solid, fun and makes you curious for more. Other troops that have already settled in various virtual countries in the Metaverse are already on the way and more food from the virtual universe should soon appear with the rock project HEATSEEKERS and the symphonic power project MELODIEL.
