Jack Draper: The Future of British Tennis

September 5, 2024

Andy Murray has‍ long been the undisputed king of British tennis, but for most of his career,‌ there was no clear ⁣heir.

Draper found himself in ‍controversy when he beat‌ Novak Djokovic on his Wimbledon debut in 2021,‌ but injuries and fitness issues threatened his‌ progress ⁢over the next few years.

However, Murray is fully fit for 2024 and was full of praise for his Davis Cup teammates during his final Wimbledon match.

“Jack is definitely‍ capable of reaching the top of his ⁢game,” Murray said. ⁣”He’s a very exciting player and⁤ I think he has a big future.”

Although⁤ he was subsequently eliminated in the second round of SW19, Draper’s performance‍ in New‌ York showcased why he is so valued by Murray.

Draper’s comments ⁤about Murray after beating Macak in the‌ fourth round in‌ New York ⁢suggested the feeling was mutual.

“I miss being around his smelly shoes and smelly clothes,”⁣ Draper said. “But Andy is a legend and if‌ I had half his career, ⁤I ‍would be a happy man.”

Draper’s success so far⁤ means he joins‍ 2012 champion Murray, 1997 runner-up‌ Greg Ruseski, and ⁢2004 semi-finalist Tim ‌Henman as the ‌first British men to enter singles in the New York Open era Final ⁤four players.
