« God has a plan »
It is an expression often used in the United States. I’m not a believer, but I believe that sometimes you just have to let life take its course and it will lead you to a good destination.
A week ago, my flight to Quebec was booked, I was going to spend the NWSL summer break at home.
After 17 consecutive hours in the air, I am now in Australia with the national team.
I will participate in the World Cup.
I got the call at 11 p.m., regarding twelve hours before my club was flying to San Diego for a regular season game.
When the coach told me that one of the defenders had suffered an injury that unfortunately prevented her from participating in the World Cup, and that if I wanted to, I now had a place on the squad, I was shocked.
Although having the opportunity to participate in the biggest soccer tournament in the world is an honor and a dream, it is obviously not how I would have preferred to be selected. Each player on the Canadian team is first and foremost a teammate, and several are friends, so it is difficult for me to see one of them withdraw a few weeks before the start of the competition.
That said, I am very grateful that this opportunity has been presented to me.
Following the coach’s call, I wanted to call my family, friends, and coaches at the Washington Spirit, but given the time, I had to resort to trying to sort out my emotions on my own. -even. A task that took me several hours, and when I finally managed to fall asleep, it was 3 am.
It wasn’t until 4 hours later that I opened my eyes once more, ready to rearrange my schedule for the next few weeks so I might fly to Australia. It was a busy day, but for a golden opportunity like this, the stress was well worth it.
If there’s one thing this situation has confirmed for me, it’s the importance of not giving up and wanting to keep working, no matter the circumstances. You never know when the tide might turn, and when an unexpected opportunity presents itself, you better be ready to seize it.
I never thought I would be in Australia this summer, and I was at peace with that reality, determined to give my all for my club in the NWSL.
Now that I’m here, I’m looking forward to my second World Cup, ready to fill whatever role is given to me to the best of my abilities.
