Cillian Murphy won a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his starring role in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” in which he plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.”
Murphy said during his speech following receiving the award: “I knew the first time I stepped onto the set of Christopher Nolan that it was going to be different. Murphy has occupied the audience and critics since the release of Oppenheimer’s film in July 2023, with his strong performance of the character, and getting close to him on a physical, formal and spiritual level. Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor who began his career as a stage actor and then moved to film and television. He is best known for portraying the character of gangster Thomas “Tommy” Shelby in the highly successful series Peaky Blinders, in addition to Batman Begins and Dunkirk. He has collaborated frequently with Christopher Nolan.
In 1996, the 20-year-old Murphy auditioned for and landed one of the lead roles in Disco Biggs, a work by playwright Enda Walsh, a success that carried on an 18-month world tour through Europe, Australia and North America.
Murphy began receiving minor film roles following the success of Disco Pigs, such as the 1998 film Sweety Barrett, starring Brendan Gleeson, and the 1999 film The Trench.

As for Murphy’s portrayal of Oppenheimer, Nolan described it as “honestly one of my favorite moments in cinema.” Murphy underwent five months of preparation before filming, losing weight to better fit the scientist’s image and rehearsing his facial expressions, Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter.
