From the Notre-Dame Market to the Rosette café-boutique

On September 5, Geneviève Savard and Jean-François Cossette announced the closure of the Notre-Dame Market following eight years of activity. Three months later, the premises came back to life with the couple’s new project: the Rosette café-boutique.

Regulars of the defunct Marché Notre-Dame will find there the coffee and plants which were also the hallmark of the place.

“We already had this project in mind when we closed the Notre-Dame Market. The Marchamps public market project had been announced and we saw that we had practically the same mission in the same district. Also, taking care of a grocery store was a significant workload and with two young children, it became complicated,” underlines Geneviève Savard, co-owner of Rosette.

“We are the owners of the premises and we did not want it to remain empty,” she adds. We already had a sub-company with Rosette. We already had a wide range of plants on the market. The grocery store is a small project that we toyed with, but, for my part, I have always had an interest in catering. And when I met Jean-François, it was already his dream to have a café. So for us, it was just a logical progression. »

In addition to the coffee and menu available on site, the boutique café offers a selection of indoor plants and accessories. The couple also wants to further develop a catering service component.

“We were already doing it a little, but we never had the time to develop it and come out with a menu. We did it mainly on request to customers, explains Geneviève Savard. We are very happy to be able to concentrate more on food. I love cooking too. As we also keep our market garden farm in Saint-Maurice, we will be able to continue cooking our vegetables. In the summer, we will still be a drop-off point for our vegetable baskets. »

A new creative space

The Rosette café-boutique has also set up a space that can host creative and collaborative workshops in partnership with the cooperative Le 507. The space will be equipped with equipment for practicing and teaching screen printing, printing and any other printing technique. two-dimensional art.

The workshop can be used by young, emerging creators who wish to make a small production of their works as well as curious people who want to discover a new creative medium.

“It’s the same principle as the pottery workshop on rue des Forges. You learn the basics and as soon as you are independent, you can come to a free workshop on your own. We will be equipped for screen printing. We separated our premises to create a room for the workshop. For us, it also allows us to rent this space. As for 507, it unlocks part of their store to accommodate more products. It represents a great development for them as well as for us,” adds Geneviève Savard.

Moreover, a crowdfunding campaign via the La Ruche platform is underway until January 12 to raise funds which will make it possible to purchase the necessary equipment, arrange and coordinate all the activities of this space. The 507 hopes to raise $10,000 through the campaign. Note that the 1001 Youth Fund, which supports the campaign, as well as the Coop Effect Fund allows the organization to have access to additional funding for a total of $21,000.
