Manolete and his legend jump into the auction ring. If a decade ago in the United States, at home Heritage, he bid on his hat, initially valued at $ 20,000 (14,419 euros); the pinstripe suit that the majestic bullfighter with a face of bitterness donned in Chicote accompanied by his great love, Lupe Sino; a wristwatch that they gave him in Mexico and a silk scarf with his name embroidered, valued at 3,200 dollars (2,300 euros), now in Spain another one is going up for auction important legacy. A dress of blue and gold lights, two capes, a pair of crutches and the sword fund, a real relic for lovers of the legend of Doña Angustias’s son.
These jewels will go up for auction at the house Ansorena the next 26 of January.
This is how it appears in its catalog, where the figure of the Monster of Córdoba is praised: «Manuel Laureano Rodríguez Sánchez, known universally as Manolete (Córdoba, July 4, 1917 – Linares, Jaén, August 29, 1947), was one of the great masters of the history of bullfighting in Spain. It is considered as a bullfighting icon for his elegant and vertical style, and for evolving the art of the crutch fighting from the front and quoting in profile. He is regarded as one of the great teachers of all time and became a myth of history of bullfighting when, in the bullring of Linares, the Miura Islero gave him a deep goring that caused his death. Here we auction some of the objects that belonged to the Fourth Califa del Toreo, an honorary title that has historically been granted to the great matadors of the province of Córdoba, which were used by the right-hander in squares of Spain and Latin America, such as those of Mexico and Lima.
These are Manolete’s personal items that go up for auction this January in the Ansorena room:
-Lot 766: pure and gold bullfighting suit. Composed of jacket, waistcoat and satchel. Lining of white linen and blue silk embroidered with appliqués and sequins with gold and red bobbin thread. Measurements: 50 x 50 cm. 60 cm. long sleeved. Starting price: 30,000 euros.
-Lot 767: pair of capes of brega. Measurements: 220 x 110 cm. each. On the back of the capes, serigraphs with the name of the right-handed Manolete and commercial stamps of Juan Jiménez and Santiago Pelayo from Madrid. One with signs of wear and tear. Starting price: 8,000 euros.
-Lot 768: pair of crutches. Measurements: 170 x 90 cm. On the return of the crutches, serigraphs with the name of the right-handed Manolete and commercial stamps of Juan Jiménez. With signs of use, wear and tear. Starting price: 6,000 euros.
-Batch 769: sword pattern with rapier and lace. Composed of cast made of embossed leather and metallic applications with the name of the right-handed Manolete and rapier and lace with its leather and metal sheath. Brands of Enrique Luna, Madrid, and R. Luna Valencia. Fundon measures: 103 x 28 cm. Rapier measurements: 93 cm. Lace measures: 82 cm. Starting price: 6,000 euros.
