Among the innovations highlighted, the use of Starlink satellites to cover information. The satellite internet access service is being launched by billionaire Elon Musk (also owner of Tesla and X) in 2021 in France. The group has three branches. The average cost? 500 euros per satellite. “We are no longer dependent on 5G, but on a constellation,” jokes Christophe de Vallambras, head of the MediaLab at France Télévisions. Tour de France, funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, coronation of King Charles III, and very recently the Rugby World Cup… The events covered via these antennas are increasing. “The process is well established,” rejoices Mr. de Vallambras. The device is quite light: a satellite which provides bandwidth all over the world and a TVU box which allows the data flow and therefore the IP addressing to be decoded.

“If we want to be somewhere, we have the means to be there from now on,” he emphasizes, mentioning for example the possibilities that this system might offer in conflict zones like that of Gaza currently.

“Coordinate”

To continue to develop this type of innovation, the public audiovisual group houses a new entity specialized in research and development, TechLab, launched this year under technical management. The department is in addition to the MediaLab, attached to the information department or the StoryLab immersive programs unit. “We find it complicated to reach an agreement on a daily basis, hence the need to coordinate through different structures,” explains Christophe de Vallambras.

Developed by Storylab, the interactive virtual reality experience Emperor, co-directed by Marion Burger, received the Venice Immersive Best Director award at the 80th Venice Film Festival.

Novelties

These different structures also revealed their new star products to the public. This is the case with Emperor, an interactive virtual reality experience on the paternal relationship and illness. Developed by Storylab, the creation co-directed by Marion Burger received the prize for Best Directed Venice Immersive at the 80th Venice Film Festival. In other areas, France Télévisions offers the public the opportunity to discover a notebook of meta-media media trends, specializing in artificial intelligence: “New Generation Media”its new studio which brings together the television news, its specials and periodicals.

And it’s not finished. Other new features are coming, such as going beyond HD. For nearly 20 million equipped households, France Télévisions plans to deploy 4K on DTT with the “deadline being the 2024 Paris Olympic Games”.
