**Interview with Maria Sanchez, a Relief Worker in Segovia**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Maria. Can you tell us what happened with the farmer in Segovia who was affected by an antipersonnel mine?
**Maria Sanchez:** Thank you for having me. The incident occurred last week when a local farmer was working in his field near the border area. Unfortunately, he accidentally triggered an antipersonnel mine that was left over from past conflicts. It’s a tragic reminder of the dangers these remnants of war pose to civilians.
**Editor:** That sounds horrific. What immediate actions were taken to help the farmer after the incident?
**Maria Sanchez:** As soon as he was evacuated, he received emergency medical care. Local authorities and health workers quickly arrived on the scene to provide first aid before transporting him to the nearest hospital. His injuries were serious, and he required extensive treatment.
**Editor:** How has the community reacted to this incident?
**Maria Sanchez:** The community is understandably shaken. Many people are aware of the risks but often feel helpless. This incident has sparked discussions about the need for better mine clearance efforts in the area and increased awareness about the dangers of unexploded ordnance.
**Editor:** Are there ongoing efforts to address the presence of antipersonnel mines in Segovia?
**Maria Sanchez:** Yes, there are several NGOs and international organizations actively working in the region to conduct mine clearance operations. It’s a slow and complex process, but their commitment to making the land safe again is critical. Increased funding and support from both the government and donors can help expedite these efforts.
**Editor:** Thank you for shedding light on this important issue, Maria. Is there anything people can do to help?
**Maria Sanchez:** Absolutely. Raising awareness is key. People can support nonprofit organizations focused on mine clearance and rehabilitation for affected individuals. Every bit helps in making areas like Segovia safer for the local communities.
**Editor:** Thank you, Maria, for your insights and the important work you do.
