From sci-fi prototyping to “Web3 x public” ─ “Learn while moving your hands” workshop! : WIRED CONFERENCE 2022[Workshop Commentary]| WIRED.jp

Due to the pandemic, it has become difficult to draw the future on an extension of the present. Considering what we should do from now on” ──“WIRED” Japanese versionWIRED Sci-Fi Prototyping LaboratoryThrough our activities, we have asked the world regarding its importance.

The research institute, which has crossed the “imagination” that science fiction writers have to draw the future and the “implementation ability” in business, will hold a special program where you can experience the power of science fiction to imagine the future of 20XX.

“AUGMENTED ECOSYSTEMS” AS A TOOL(DAY1)
Now, let’s go out to the streets of Shibuya! A workshop for transforming cities from “extended ecosystems”

An “extended ecosystem” is one in which human beings actively participate in nature to regenerate the environment and have a positive impact on the ecosystem. If people are still concentrated in cities in the 22nd century, it should be important to expand the environment with human hands.

It is important not to forget “humility” when facing something that is not well understood in terms of the overall picture of the ecosystem. Let go of your sense of omnipotence, and don’t easily say, “This initiative will improve the environment.” By looking at the city with such a mindset, we should be able to see a new relationship between humans and nature.

This book will be held with Kosuke Katano, who has been involved in research on “extended ecosystems,” Kiyoshi Suganuma, who has been involved in the application of biotechnology to artistic expression and the development of educational programs at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media[YCAM]and Kazutoshi Tsuda. At the workshop, we jump out of the conference venue and go out to the city of Shibuya. By recapturing the landscape from the perspective of an “extended ecosystem,” we will think regarding a future city that is surrounded by a rich ecosystem.

BUILDING THE NEW COMMONS(DAY2)
Web3 for whom? Experience and implement a blockchain that enriches the “public” and “commons”!

Web3’s focus is on the economic and investment aspects, but its true value should be seen in its approach to “coordination failures” at the social level, such as disparities and climate change.

Kevin Owocki, founder of GitCoin, the organization that funds the open-source Web3 project, believes that environmental problems, democratic failures, and extreme economic inequality will ultimately result in human failures to work together and positive externalities. He argued that the reason for this is that cryptocurrencies are not being used well, and emphasized the importance of a “regenerative crypto economy.” The idea that the wicked problem in modern society can be solved by designing appropriate incentives using Web3 technology is now attracting attention.
