“These backpacks and these school supplies will, in most cases, be stored inside a tent, because we still cannot arrive with the necessary emergency housing. The children will probably have their school supplies and backpacks, but I don’t know if they will be able to attend classes even though we start this Wednesday, because there are no showers or bathrooms to be able to clean themselves enough,” he expressed.
In addition, he accused that there is not enough transportation or food capacity, “despite, and I am grateful, that we are all doing everything we can and dedicating more than 18 hours of work to fulfill our labor and political responsibility, we are still missing too much.”
“There are always things that can be improved”
In the followingnoon, the head of state visited sectors of the damaged areas, met with the mayors of Viña del Mar, Villa Alemana and Quilpué, local and national authorities, and with the technical coordinator for reconstruction.
At the end of the instance, he responded to those who have said “very lightly that nothing has been done here”: “I want to tell you that that is not true. “There are always things that can be improved, there are places where we might be more efficient.”
“In the face of a catastrophe of these characteristics, there will always be needs that have not yet been covered, but that we are making the maximum effort to reach, but it is not true that nothing has been done,” he added.
In addition, he expressed his commitment to those affected by the fires. “The urgency today and where the main efforts are focused is on the roof. Between now and winter, until the rains stop, all affected families have to have a roof over their heads. “Those are emergency homes or some of the alternatives that the corresponding authorities will take into account, but between now and winter everyone has to have a roof,” he said.
Along with this, President Boric called on the National Congress to approve the Fire Law and the creation of the National Forest Service.
